At Threemile, summer is a busy season full of sunny days, cultivating crops, and caring for our cows. It’s also a time when we welcome some additional faces to the farm: interns.

Our 8-week internship program provides students who are passionate about agriculture with the opportunity to turn textbook knowledge into real-world experience. From agronomy to animal science, water management, and accounting, these students represent a wide range of interests while all sharing a commitment to advancing the future of our industry.

“I’m learning a lot that will benefit me in the future, about both crop science and everything a big farm has to offer,” says Cody Carlon, a third year agronomy intern.

The variety of crops within our operation also gives students a chance to learn about a growing system they may not have been exposed to before.

Agronomy intern Kaydee Heitstuman says that’s been one of her favorite parts so far.

“It’s been an opportunity for me to learn a lot about a different side of agriculture,” she shares.

Participants in the program receive:

  • A $10,000 scholarship upon completion of their summer internship
  • Direct experience in crop and dairy farming within a closed-loop system
  • Training and mentorship from an experienced team
  • A pathway to potential full-time employment after graduation

This program is one of the many ways we invest in the long-term strength of agriculture, teaching and encouraging agriculture’s future leaders. In fact, many of our team members started at Threemile as interns before deciding to build their careers here, and it’s a point of pride for us that they chose to stick around.

Meet the 2026 interns:

Harley Anderson is studying crop and soil science at Oregon State University, and is spending her second summer with the Threemile agronomy team. She loves working here for the variety of different crops she gets to work with.

Eli Bisneius is a student at the University of Idaho studying water science and management. He’s joining the irrigation team at Threemile this summer, and says his favorite part has been seeing how the farm manages such a large amount of water so efficiently across their fields.

Cody Carlon is starting her third summer as an intern with the agronomy team. The University of Idaho agricultural education and animal science student says the Threemile team culture and benefits such as scholarship support are what keeps her coming back year after year.

Riley Crosby is a dairy science major at the University of Idaho. She is excited to learn from the Threemile team and contribute to a research project studying the effectiveness of various barn cooling systems.

Emily Hancock attends Brigham Young University–Idaho, where she is studying plant science and technology. This is Emily’s second summer with Threemile, and says her favorite part is testing potatoes and seeing how the crops grow.

Kaydee Heitstuman attends the University of Idaho, studying agricultural science, communication and leadership. She joins Threemile as an agronomy intern this summer, and her favorite part so far has been learning from such knowledgeable, experienced people on the team.

Caden Hottman is excited to join the accounting department for the fourth summer in a row. He is pursuing an MBA at the University of Idaho, and hopes to join the Threemile crew full-time once his schooling is complete.

Austyn Katsel is spending her first summer with the agronomy team, and is excited for 8 weeks full of learning and hands on experience. At the end of the summer, Austyn will return to Oregon State University where she is studying crop and soil science.

Ben Klein comes to Boardman from University of Mary in North Dakota where he is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in project management. This is Ben’s second summer interning with the irrigation department, he says the people he gets to work with are what drove him to return.

Miguel Pena is a recent high school graduate who plans to attend an electrical school in Kennewick this fall. He’s worked at Threemile before, but never with the agronomy team, which he says has been a fun learning experience.

Brooke Switzer is attending Oregon State University, studying agricultural and food business management. Brooke doesn’t come from a farming background, so she says working as a crop accounting intern with Threemile seemed like the perfect way to learn more about the industry.

Emily Wilson is working as a dairy intern with Threemile this summer, where she is getting exposure to each of our different departments and completing a research project on using health monitoring tags in youngstock. Emily is a student at Oregon State University, where she is studying animal science with a pre-vet emphasis.

Over the course of the summer, these interns will be fully immersed in the day-to-day operations at Threemile. Whatever department they are working in, this group will experience firsthand what it takes to run a modern and sustainable agricultural operation.

As the season unfolds, we’re excited to watch this group develop skills, build connections and take steps toward their future careers.

“I would definitely recommend doing an internship at Threemile,” says Harley Anderson, an agronomy intern who has returned for her second year. “It’s a lot of fun, you get to meet a lot of people and do a lot of cool things.”
